Unseasonal rains causing loss of lives and crops in TN. State govt should give insurance to farmers and be better prepared for flash floods.

Expressing grave concern over the destruction caused by unseasonal rains across Tamil Nadu, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin called upon the state government to immediately disburse crop insurance benefits and strengthen disaster preparedness. Sudden downpours during May 2015 caused severe inundation in several agricultural belts, resulting in loss of human lives, damage to dwellings, and extensive damage to standing crops nearing harvest. Stalin emphasized that vulnerable farmers, already grappling with mounting debts and previous dry spells, were pushed into acute distress by sudden weather anomalies. He criticized the state administration for recurring complacency in disaster management, pointing out that local bodies and revenue departments failed to issue timely advisories or desilt drainage channels. Stalin demanded that district administrations conduct rapid field assessments to record crop damages without administrative delays. He insisted that comprehensive crop insurance settlements and direct financial assistance must reach affected families immediately. Additionally, Stalin urged the government to formulate long-term flood resilience protocols, fortify water storage structures, and maintain round-the-clock emergency response teams to protect rural livelihoods from recurring climate-induced weather extremes with utmost urgency and compassionate commitment.
