Reacting with grave concern to recurring maritime aggressions in June 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin condemned the arrest of fourteen Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy in waters adjacent to Katchatheevu. The artisanal fishermen, who set sail from Rameswaram, had their trawlers seized and were remanded to foreign custody, leaving their dependent coastal families in acute economic distress and emotional agony. Stalin pointed out that despite repeated claims by the state AIADMK administration regarding diplomatic correspondence with the Centre, attacks, mid-sea harassment, and unlawful detentions of Tamil fisherfolk continued unabated. He criticized the state government for failing to implement its longstanding electoral promise to establish a specialized Marine Coastal Protection Force to safeguard local fishing fleets within traditional fishing zones. Stalin demanded that both the Central and Tamil Nadu governments take immediate, decisive diplomatic measures to secure the unconditional release of the detained fishermen and their motorized vessels, urging a permanent bilateral solution that guarantees historical fishing rights around Katchatheevu without fear of foreign military assault and ensure durable physical safety and economic dignity for coastal fishing communities.
