Raising strong voice on behalf of distressed agrarian communities in southern Tamil Nadu in June 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin severely condemned the ruling AIADMK government for ignoring the urgent water demands of Thoothukudi farmers. Cultivators along the lower reaches of the Tamirabarani river basin were protesting against the state administration's refusal to release water from upstream reservoirs for early agricultural sowing, leaving thousands of acres of fertile soil parched and threatening the livelihoods of small farming families. Stalin highlighted that while crops withered, the government displayed shocking apathy toward completing the Tamirabarani-Karumeniyar-Nambiyar flood canal linking project. Conceived and funded under the previous DMK administration to divert unutilized surplus floodwaters to drought-prone agricultural zones in southern districts, the crucial river linking initiative had been completely starved of budgetary allocations under AIADMK rule. Stalin asserted that bureaucratic indifference was ruining the agrarian economy of the south. He demanded the immediate release of irrigation water and the allocation of emergency capital funds to complete the river linking canal without further delay and secure long-term water security for struggling farming households throughout the region.
