Protested in Kolathur against ADMK govt's inaction on water scarcity. Metro water in 1220 cr debt as callous govt pushes state to drought
DMK treasurer and Kolathur legislator M.K. Stalin led a massive demonstration in Kolathur on July 31, 2015, protesting against the acute drinking water crisis plaguing Chennai and the complete failure of the AIADMK regime to manage the state's water resources. Addressing hundreds of residents carrying empty plastic pots, Stalin exposed that the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metro Water) had been pushed into a crushing debt burden of 1,220 crore rupees due to financial mismanagement.
Stalin observed that while working-class families in North Chennai were forced to spend entire nights standing in serpentine queues for erratic municipal water tankers, the ruling dispensation had failed to execute crucial desilting of major reservoirs like Chembarambakkam, Poondi, and Red Hills. Corroded supply pipes remained unreplaced, pumping stations lacked operational funds, and groundwater aquifers were rapidly depleting without systematic rainwater harvesting revival.
Stalin cautioned that the government's callous indifference was pushing the metropolitan area toward catastrophic drought and health hazards. He demanded immediate budgetary subventions to clear Metro Water's liabilities, repair broken distribution pipelines, and restore regular piped drinking water supply to all residential wards in Kolathur.
