Editorial context

DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin participated in a massive public demonstration organized by the Chennai South district unit of the DMK on August 10, 2015, demanding the immediate closure of all state-run TASMAC liquor shops and the phased enforcement of total prohibition across Tamil Nadu. Addressing thousands of impassioned protesters, including large numbers of women and college students, Stalin denounced the AIADMK government for sacrificing public welfare to generate state liquor revenues.

Stalin emphasized that the demand for prohibition had evolved into a massive, unstoppable people's movement uniting all sections of Tamil society. He criticized the Jayalalithaa regime for using brutal police repression, baton charges, and arrests against peaceful anti-liquor agitators, students, and women protesting outside neighborhood liquor shops. Stalin declared that an administration that survives on the tears of impoverished mothers and the destruction of youth has completely lost its moral right to govern.

Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK remained unswerving in its pledge to ban liquor sales once it assumed power. He urged cadres and civil society to intensify peaceful agitations until the autocratic regime is compelled to respect the public will.
