DMK treasurer and Kolathur legislator M.K. Stalin announced the successful completion of the first extensive round of his pioneering 'Pesalam Vanga' (Come, Let's Talk) grassroots public engagement program on August 17, 2015. Over several intensive weeks, Stalin conducted open-air consultative meetings across diverse wards and neighborhoods in Kolathur, engaging directly with thousands of residents, traders, students, and civic activists without protocol barriers.
The 'Pesalam Vanga' initiative established a benchmark for participatory local democracy, allowing ordinary citizens to directly voice their concerns regarding sewage overflows, drinking water shortages, poor street lighting, and delayed infrastructure maintenance. Rather than addressing gatherings from elevated stages, Stalin sat among the residents, listened attentively, recorded specific complaints into a digital tracking system, and committed to taking up each grievance with municipal and government authorities.
Stalin affirmed that participatory democracy cannot be restricted to election seasons and must function as a continuous, organic relationship between elected representatives and citizens. He announced that the DMK would expand this successful consultative outreach model to other assembly constituencies, institutionalizing direct public accountability across all assembly constituencies throughout Tamil Nadu permanently.
