This #MadrasDay, let's commit to preserving our heritage & building a better Chennai for the future

Editorial context

DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin extended heartiest greetings to the residents of Chennai and Tamils across the world on the occasion of Madras Day on August 22, 2015, celebrating the founding anniversary of the vibrant metropolis. Stalin called upon citizens and civic planners to make a renewed commitment toward meticulously preserving the city's extraordinary historical heritage while collaboratively building an inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and progressive urban future.

Stalin recalled his deep personal and political relationship with Chennai, having served as its first directly elected Mayor between 1996 and 2002 and subsequently as Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration. Under DMK leadership, the city underwent transformative infrastructural modernization, including the construction of iconic flyovers, expansion of green parks, computerization of municipal services, and the conceptualization of the Chennai Metro Rail project. He emphasized that Chennai's historic monuments, colonial architecture, and indigenous cultural institutions must be actively protected from neglect and unplanned urban sprawl.

Stalin urged everyone who cherishes Chennai to protect its waterbodies, expand urban tree canopies, and foster civic responsibility, ensuring that the metropolis remains a beacon of cultural pride and modern progress.
