Demonstrating deep concern for one of the most vulnerable and marginalized labour segments in Tamil Nadu, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin visited the expansive salt pans in Tuticorin district during his Namakku Naame outreach tour. Walking into the salt pans under blistering heat, Stalin interacted directly with men and women labourers who worked barefoot in hyper-saline brine for ten to twelve hours daily. Workers described severe, chronic health ailments, including corneal blindness from intense solar reflection, skin ulcerations, respiratory distress, and early physical incapacitation, lamenting the total absence of protective gear or medical clinics on-site.

Stalin was deeply moved by their harrowing accounts, condemning the AIADMK administration for treating salt pan workers with callous indifference. He demanded that the state Labour and Health departments mandate the provision of specialized protective boots, UV-blocking goggles, and clean drinking water stations at all salt production sites. Stalin also urged the creation of dedicated mobile health clinics and monsoon subsistence allowances for workers during rain-affected months. He promised that a DMK administration would establish a dedicated Salt Workers Welfare Board, ensuring comprehensive healthcare, pensions, and dignified working conditions for Tuticorin's salt workers.
