Advancing through central Tamil Nadu during the first phase of his Namakku Naame campaign in late September 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin spent the second half of an intensive day traversing Dindigul district. Renowned for its traditional brass lock manufacturing, handloom textiles, and expansive horticultural cultivation, Dindigul presented a microcosm of the widespread economic distress afflicting Tamil Nadu. Stalin visited artisanal workshops where traditional lock makers described how power outages, spiralling raw brass costs, and lack of cooperative credit had pushed their globally celebrated craft into severe decline. He also met with floriculture cultivators, onion farmers, and fruit orchard owners from Oddanchatram, who highlighted market price volatility, middleman exploitation, and the urgent need for refrigerated storage and food processing facilities. Engaging with hundreds of youth and women's self-help groups along roadside meetings, Stalin emphasized that the DMK was committed to revitalizing rural industries and fostering sustainable self-employment. He promised that a future DMK administration would extend subsidized credit to traditional artisans, modernize wholesale agricultural markets, and implement comprehensive regional development programs to restore Dindigul's economic vitality and safeguard artisan livelihoods.
