Traversing the agrarian and textile district of Karur during his Namakku Naame grassroots tour in mid-October 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin witnessed firsthand the catastrophic decay of regional water resources. Meeting with farmers along the Cauvery, Amaravathi, and Noyyal river basins, Stalin examined how decades of civic neglect and unchecked industrial effluents had poisoned water bodies that previously irrigated thousands of acres of fertile soil. Cultivators explained that untreated textile processing waste and industrial toxic sludge were routinely discharged into riverbeds and irrigation tanks, rendering groundwater completely unfit for farming and human consumption. Stalin observed that water contamination had destroyed coconut groves and banana plantations while triggering serious public health hazards, including chronic skin disorders and groundwater-borne ailments among rural villagers. He sharply criticized the AIADMK government and the State Pollution Control Board for failing to enforce environmental regulations or assist small dyeing units in establishing functional Common Effluent Treatment Plants. Stalin promised that a future DMK administration would launch an integrated river rejuvenation mission, restore Karur's traditional tank networks, and implement zero-liquid-discharge standards to secure agrarian sustainability for farming and drinking needs.
