Editorial context

Demonstrating deep solidarity with agrarian producers during the second phase of his Namakku Naame yatra in Thanjavur district in October 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin stepped directly into waterlogged paddy fields. Rolling up his trousers and walking through the muddy soil, Stalin actively participated alongside rural farming workers in transplanting paddy saplings. The hands-on engagement provided an unvarnished platform for delta agriculturalists to convey their severe everyday struggles. Farmers emphasized that the lifeblood of their cultivation—the ancient network of Cauvery irrigation channels, distributaries, and drainage canals—had been totally neglected by the AIADMK administration. Without timely desilting and maintenance before the onset of the monsoon, tail-end fields suffered acute water starvation while mid-reach farmlands faced severe waterlogging during heavy rains. Cultivators explained that bureaucratic apathy and delayed water release from Mettur Dam had caused widespread crop failures and pushed agricultural households into spiralling non-institutional debt. Stalin commended the hard labour of the farming community and assured them that an incoming DMK government would execute time-bound canal desilting on a war footing, protecting the agricultural heritage and economic security of Tamil Nadu's rice bowl.
