Touring the coastal and delta district of Nagapattinam during the second phase of his Namakku Naame outreach tour in October 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin examined the multifaceted agrarian, coastal, and rehabilitation challenges confronting local communities. Meeting with paddy farmers across delta taluks, Stalin was confronted with deep distress over the AIADMK administration's failure to desilt the intricate network of Cauvery and Vennar river distributaries, resulting in acute irrigation shortages at the tail ends. Simultaneously, Stalin visited coastal fishing hamlets, where artisanal fishing families presented two grave concerns: the alarming failure of the state government to complete permanent concrete housing and infrastructure under tsunami rehabilitation programs even a decade after the 2004 catastrophe, and the escalating attacks and unlawful arrests of Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy in traditional Palk Bay waters. Stalin strongly condemned the central and state governments for their callous indifference to maritime security and fisherfolk welfare. He pledged that a future DMK government would execute comprehensive desilting of irrigation channels, finalize stalled coastal housing schemes, and forcefully demand permanent diplomatic protection for Tamil Nadu fishermen.
