During his Namakku Naame campaign in Villupuram district in late October 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin visited impoverished rural hamlets to inspect living conditions among marginalized communities. He was shocked to find thousands of Dalit and backward-class families still living in squalid, dilapidated thatched huts that leaked during heavy rains and caught fire easily during hot summers. Stalin reminded the public that the previous DMK government under Chief Minister Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi had launched the historic Kalaignar Veetu Vasathi Thittam with the ambitious goal of constructing twenty-one lakh permanent concrete houses to make Tamil Nadu completely hut-free. However, upon assuming power, the AIADMK regime scrapped this transformative mass welfare scheme purely out of political spite. In its place, the ruling party introduced a hollow replacement scheme with negligible targets and cumbersome bureaucratic hurdles, leaving millions of hut-dwellers completely abandoned. Stalin condemned this vindictive attitude, noting that poor families were deprived of dignified housing simply because the scheme carried Kalaignar's name. He pledged that a future DMK government would revive mass permanent housing programmes to fulfill the dream of a hut-free Tamil Nadu.
