Issuing a grave indictment of democratic regression under the AIADMK administration in late October 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin declared that Tamil Nadu was witnessing an unprecedented assault on human rights and constitutional liberties. Observing how political dissenters, folk performers, journalists, and civic activists were routinely targeted with arbitrary detentions, criminal defamation suits, and draconian sedition charges, Stalin remarked that the prevailing atmosphere was dangerously reminiscent of the 1975 Emergency. He pointed out that democratic assemblies were routinely denied police permission, peaceful rallies were brutally lathi-charged, and citizens exercising their fundamental right to free expression lived in constant dread of midnight police abductions. Stalin asserted that democracy cannot survive without the freedom to question executive failure, demanding that the state administration cease its authoritarian tactics. He warned that the ruling party was fatally mistaken if it believed that fear and police batons could permanently suppress the sovereign will of the people of Tamil Nadu. Stalin reaffirmed the DMK's historic commitment to civil liberties, pledging that the party would lead a statewide democratic resistance to restore constitutional values and human rights protections.
