Reacting with outrage to the authoritarian suppression of artistic freedom, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin strongly condemned the midnight arrest of popular folk artist Kovan by Chennai police in Tiruchirappalli in late October 2015. Police personnel raided the singer's residence at 2:30 AM and whisked him away under draconian charges of sedition and promoting public enmity simply because he composed and sang 'Moodu TASMAC-ai' (Shut Down TASMAC), a song reflecting public revulsion against state liquor trade. Stalin termed the nocturnal arrest a barbaric act of political cowardice, noting that artistic expression, folk satire, and peaceful protests are foundational rights in a democratic society. He highlighted that rather than addressing the devastating social epidemic of alcoholism and widespread popular demands for prohibition, the AIADMK regime chose to treat a traditional folk artist as a dangerous criminal. Stalin emphasized that using colonial sedition statutes to muzzle critical voices exposed the insecure, dictatorial mindset of the ruling government. He demanded the immediate, unconditional release of Kovan, the dropping of all false charges, and an end to police harassment of social activists exercising legitimate democratic freedoms of speech.
