Connecting with rural women at the grassroots level during his Namakku Naame campaign in late October 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin rode a traditional bullock cart to attend a massive gathering of Women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Women from agricultural and artisan households turned out in large numbers to voice their acute economic and domestic hardships. The prevailing sentiment echoed a resolute demand for the total prohibition of alcohol sales across Tamil Nadu. Women recounted how state-run TASMAC liquor retail outlets had shattered domestic peace, depleted family savings, exacerbated domestic violence, and claimed the lives of young breadwinners due to alcohol addiction. They criticized the AIADMK administration for treating alcohol revenue as its primary budgetary crutch while systematically weakening the financial autonomy of self-help groups. Stalin assured the women that their righteous crusade for prohibition had become a central commitment of the DMK. He pledged that an incoming DMK government would implement phased prohibition, revive bank credit linkages and revolving funds for self-help groups, and protect rural families from the social and financial ruin caused by state-sponsored liquor retail and restore domestic peace across rural households.
