Engaging with large gatherings of vibrant college students and young professionals during the Namakku Naame tour in November 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin unveiled a major progressive electoral reform proposal. Recognizing that youth constituted the energetic majority of Tamil Nadu's population yet remained largely excluded from direct parliamentary representation, Stalin announced that the DMK would actively campaign for reducing the legal age requirement for contesting assembly and parliamentary elections. Under existing statutes, citizens could vote at eighteen but were barred from contesting legislative elections until reaching twenty-five years of age. Stalin argued that if young adults were legally deemed mature enough to elect governments, choose careers, and manage families, they undoubtedly possessed the requisite intellect and leadership capacity to represent communities in legislative assemblies. He emphasized that modernizing governance required infusing legislative bodies with innovative thinking, technological proficiency, and dynamic enthusiasm characteristic of today's younger generation. Stalin promised that a future DMK administration would champion statutory reforms to empower youth politically, ensuring that young leaders played a decisive role in shaping public policy, state legislation, and democratic nation-building in contemporary democratic society.
