Editorial context

During the second day of his extensive Namakku Naame outreach tour across Kanchipuram district in early November 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin drew profound inspiration from Tamil civilization's glorious democratic heritage. Addressing vibrant public gatherings in the historic temple city, Stalin invoked the legacy of the imperial Cholas, particularly the ancient local self-government system recorded in the celebrated tenth-century Uttiramerur stone inscriptions. He reminded citizens that Tamil society possessed an illustrious history of village assemblies, transparent ballot systems, and democratic civic accountability long before modern constitutions emerged. Contrasting this proud historical tradition with the autocratic, secretive, and authoritarian style of the ruling AIADMK regime, Stalin called upon the people of Kanchipuram to rise with collective self-respect. He urged citizens, youth, and traditional weavers to unite behind the DMK to overthrow administrative tyranny and restore genuine participatory democracy. Stalin reaffirmed that a future DMK government would revive grassroots self-rule, revitalize traditional silk and textile industries, and govern with transparency rooted in the enduring values of Tamil cultural heritage and egalitarian civic empowerment that defined great historical traditions throughout Tamil history and culture.
