Travelling to the coastal district of Cuddalore in mid-November 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin surveyed the catastrophic devastation unleashed by intense cyclonic rainstorms. Vast swathes of fertile agricultural land lay submerged under muddy waters, destroying standing paddy and commercial crops, while thousands of rural dwellings collapsed, leaving families shelterless and vulnerable. Interacting directly with distressed small farmers and displaced villagers, Stalin witnessed firsthand the acute misery caused by the absence of timely state assistance. He launched a severe political critique against Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, condemning her decision to remain secluded in her hill resort retreat at Kodanad while citizens across Tamil Nadu battled life-threatening floods. Stalin asserted that democratic leadership required an elected Chief Minister to be physically present among suffering people during major crises to supervise relief and comfort victims. He demanded that the state government immediately declare Cuddalore a disaster-affected zone, expedite cash compensation for ruined crops, and deploy emergency teams to reconstruct damaged bunds, restore rural roads, and provide clean drinking water to prevent imminent waterborne disease outbreaks across the district without procedural administrative delays or bureaucratic inertia.
