In December 2015, the Supreme Court of India issued sharp observations reprimanding the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu for its systematic abuse of the legal machinery to silence political opponents, journalists, and civic activists. The ruling regime had developed a routine practice of invoking criminal defamation charges against any public criticism and slapping draconian sedition provisions on democratic dissenters. Welcoming the apex court's stern remarks, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin stated that the judicial rebuke provided tremendous relief to democratic forces and exposed the authoritarian character of the ruling administration. Stalin emphasized that a healthy democracy thrives on public scrutiny, robust debate, and accountability, whereas the AIADMK government operated under an atmosphere of fear and institutional intimidation. He pointed out that hundreds of defamation suits had been filed at taxpayers' expense simply to protect the ego of the Chief Minister and cover up governance failures. Stalin urged the government to heed the Supreme Court's stern warning, immediately withdraw all frivolous cases, and unconditionally respect fundamental constitutional rights to free speech, lawful assembly, and peaceful democratic expression across Tamil Nadu in the modern democratic era.
