Following catastrophic downpours that submerged Chennai in early December 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin toured flood-ravaged neighbourhoods to assess the scale of human and physical damage. Walking through submerged streets where floodwaters reached chest height, he witnessed the heartbreaking devastation experienced by thousands of marooned families who had lost their household belongings and were left stranded without drinking water, electricity, or dry shelter. Stalin expressed profound anguish over the suffering of vulnerable communities and stated unequivocally that ensuring the physical safety, emergency evacuation, and survival of every citizen had to be the single highest priority of all public agencies. He criticized the glaring absence of coordinated state disaster machinery during the crucial initial hours of the disaster, pointing out that citizens had been abandoned to fend for themselves amid rising waters. Stalin mobilized party workers and volunteer squads to deploy rescue boats, clear blocked passages, and transport vulnerable families to safe elevated buildings. He insisted that the government deploy defense personnel, boats, and emergency medical teams immediately to rescue citizens still trapped in submerged residential pockets across the state capital.
