Demanding urgent economic relief for the backbone of urban commerce, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin urged the AIADMK government to announce immediate financial compensation packages and comprehensive tax concessions for thousands of small traders, shopkeepers, and commercial enterprises devastated by the historic Chennai floods. Stalin pointed out that the deluge had inundated commercial markets, wholesale bazaars, and neighborhood shopping streets in Koyambedu, T. Nagar, Saidapet, and suburban hubs, destroying merchandise, raw materials, electronic equipment, and account ledgers worth thousands of crores.
Stalin highlighted that small retail merchants and micro-entrepreneurs, who operate on small working capital and informal borrowings, were completely paralyzed without immediate liquidity to restart business operations. Instead of providing emergency rehabilitation grants or soft loans, the state administration had remained entirely inert, offering no relief to the commercial sector. Stalin demanded that the government immediately disburse non-repayable rehabilitation grants of up to one lakh rupees for flood-damaged micro-enterprises, waive commercial property taxes and electricity charges for six months, and direct state-level bankers to provide interest-free working capital loans. He affirmed that economic revival requires protecting local trade, promising that the DMK would stand steadfastly with the business community.
