Addressing an acute humanitarian and public health concern arising during post-flood restoration operations in Chennai, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin urged the state government to immediately provide basic civic amenities, hygienic shelter, and comprehensive healthcare protection for thousands of municipal conservancy workers. Stalin pointed out that in the aftermath of the catastrophic December floods, the state government had mobilized over ten thousand sanitation workers from rural districts alongside the local workforce to clear mountains of rotting sludge, animal carcasses, and biomedical waste.
Stalin expressed deep moral outrage that while these courageous sanitary workers performed heroic, hazardous public service wading through toxic floodwaters to protect citizens from epidemic outbreaks, the AIADMK administration treated them with shocking indifference. Workers were forced to sleep on wet pavements and uncleaned school corridors without blankets, drinking water, warm food, or basic protective equipment like gloves, gumboots, and face masks. Several workers had already collapsed from leptospirosis, skin infections, and severe physical exhaustion. Stalin demanded that the government immediately provide sanitized indoor accommodations, nutritious meals, comprehensive medical checkups, and a special risk allowance of ten thousand rupees for each worker.
