Extending unconditional political and moral solidarity to the statewide prohibition movement, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin flagged off the historic anti-liquor foot march led by veteran Gandhian leader and former parliamentarian Kumari Ananthan. The grueling padayatra, commencing from Chennai and traversing hundreds of kilometers through coastal and interior districts to culminate in Kanyakumari, was undertaken to mobilize public conscience and demand the immediate, total prohibition of alcohol across Tamil Nadu.
Stalin praised Kumari Ananthan's lifelong Gandhian dedication to social reform, emphasizing that alcohol addiction had emerged as a devastating socio-economic disease that was destroying working-class families, eroding domestic finances, and driving thousands of young men into early graves. He pointed out that while women across the state were crying out for the closure of state-run TASMAC liquor retail shops, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's government was heartlessly expanding liquor sales to maximize state revenues. Stalin reiterated that the DMK under party president Kalaignar Karunanidhi had made an irrevocable, solemn policy declaration that total prohibition would be implemented as the very first legislative act upon assuming power. He assured the Gandhian marchers of the DMK's total grassroots support throughout their journey.
