Focusing urgent attention on the most marginalized segment of the urban workforce, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin highlighted the critical grievances and aspirations of municipal sanitation workers during the fourth phase of his historic Namakku Naame statewide journey. Interacting directly with conservancy workers, sewage cleaners, and street sweepers in Chennai, Stalin expressed profound anguish over the degrading, hazardous, and dehumanizing conditions in which thousands of men and women were forced to labor without basic protective gear or dignity.
Stalin condemned the AIADMK administration for exploiting sanitation workers through opaque private contracting agencies that siphoned off wages, denied mandatory provident fund contributions, and delayed monthly wage payments. Workers voiced their urgent demands for human dignity, permanent job regularisation, concrete housing shelters, and specialized medical health facilities to treat chronic occupational diseases. Stalin affirmed that manual scavenging and hazardous unprotected sanitation work are intolerable stains on modern civilization. He gave a firm pledge that an incoming DMK government would eradicate manual scavenging through automated robotic machinery, regularize contract sanitation workers into permanent government service, provide risk allowances, and build dignified housing settlements for all conservancy worker families.
