Championing the welfare of industrial laborers and public transport workers, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin conducted an extensive community outreach in Chennai during the fourth phase of Namakku Naame, meeting employees of the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Kolathur followed by auto-rickshaw drivers in Egmore. Meeting with skilled railway technicians, engineers, and manufacturing workers at Kolathur, Stalin listened to pressing concerns regarding contractualization of permanent jobs, lack of railway colony maintenance, and rising workplace safety hazards.
Subsequently engaging with hundreds of auto-rickshaw drivers at Egmore railway station, Stalin heard harrowing accounts of relentless police harassment, arbitrary fines, soaring vehicle financing interest rates, and the lack of basic parking stands and social security. Stalin praised both groups as the hardworking backbone of urban mobility and national manufacturing. He recalled that the DMK under Kalaignar Karunanidhi had originally created the pioneering Auto-Rickshaw Drivers Welfare Board to provide accident relief, pensions, and educational aid. Stalin promised that an incoming DMK government would modernize railway suburban infrastructure, eliminate check-post corruption, revitalize the auto welfare board, and provide subsidized vehicle loans to ensure economic dignity for drivers.
