Editorial context

Directly challenging the political conscience of the electorate ahead of the crucial assembly elections, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin asked the people of Tamil Nadu whether they wanted to endure another five years under an absentee Chief Minister who remained visible only on publicity hoardings and relief packets. Stalin drew sharp attention to the tragic contrast between the extensive public suffering during the catastrophic December 2015 floods and the absolute physical absence of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa from flood-ravaged streets and relief camps.

Stalin observed that while ordinary citizens, youth volunteers, and civil defense groups risked their lives wading through chest-deep floodwaters to rescue stranded residents, ruling party cadres were busy intercepting humanitarian aid trucks to paste government stickers bearing the Chief Minister's photograph on private relief materials. He noted that even during severe public disasters, the ruling establishment was obsessed with personality cults and cosmetic publicity rather than genuine public service. Stalin asserted that a mature, proud democracy like Tamil Nadu deserved an energetic, accessible, and accountable leadership that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with citizens during adversity. He urged voters to reject this callous absentee administration and vote for the DMK alliance.
