Expressing deep disappointment on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin stated that the central government's Railway Budget for 2016-17 completely failed to reflect the urgent developmental aspirations and logistical necessities of the state. Stalin observed that southern railway divisions, which generate substantial passenger and freight revenues for Indian Railways, were meted out step-motherly treatment with negligible fund allocations, zero announcements of new long-distance express trains, and prolonged delays in executing approved track-doubling and safety modernization works.

Stalin highlighted the acute distress facing millions of daily commuters in metropolitan Chennai and fast-growing industrial belts like Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Salem, who endured severely overcrowded trains, obsolete signaling systems, and deficient passenger amenities. He noted that key agricultural and commercial regions in the delta and southern districts remained disconnected from broad-gauge railway networks due to glacial execution speeds under central neglect. He blamed the situation on the lack of strong, coordinated advocacy from the state government, which failed to articulate Tamil Nadu's infrastructure priorities effectively in New Delhi. Stalin pledged that the DMK would champion regional railway connectivity to drive balanced economic development across all districts.
