Delivering a scathing condemnation of the cold-hearted and detached conduct of the state leadership, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin held Chief Minister Jayalalithaa accountable for her shocking failure to lead from the front during the catastrophic December 2015 floods. Stalin reminded the public that the historic deluge had resulted in the tragic loss of 347 human lives, submerged hundreds of thousands of homes across Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Cuddalore districts, and destroyed public and private property estimated at upwards of twenty-five thousand crore rupees.
Stalin pointed out that while entire residential colonies were submerged under ten feet of water and desperate citizens pleaded for food, drinking water, and boats on social media, the Chief Minister remained completely invisible. Instead of visiting flooded neighborhoods or consoling grieving families, her only response to the massive humanitarian disaster was a brief, pre-recorded audio message circulated through the WhatsApp messaging application. Stalin remarked that governing a proud state of seven crore people cannot be reduced to sending audio recordings from a secluded residence. He asserted that Tamil Nadu deserved a courageous, empathetic leadership that stands on the ground with citizens during crises, promising responsible disaster governance under the DMK.
