Exposing the hollow rhetoric and deceptive welfare posturing of the AIADMK regime, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin called attention to a blatant example of tokenism in the state's women empowerment programs. Stalin pointed out that while Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had grandly announced with immense publicity that twenty thousand women self-help group trainers across Tamil Nadu would be equipped with modern mobile phones to enhance their field coordination and microcredit monitoring, the government organized a staged ceremony to distribute handsets to just three individuals.
Stalin condemned this cynical maneuver as an insulting fraud perpetrated against thousands of hardworking rural women who had dedicated their lives to organizing grassroots savings groups and fostering community entrepreneurship. He observed that making bombastic announcements in the legislative assembly under Rule 110 and subsequently abandoning them after achieving newspaper headlines had become the trademark operating style of the AIADMK government. Stalin affirmed that the DMK, which originally pioneered the revolutionary self-help group movement in Dharmapuri under Kalaignar Karunanidhi, treats women's economic independence with utmost institutional seriousness. He pledged that an incoming DMK government would provide genuine technological, financial, and marketing support to all self-help group members without discriminatory publicity stunts.
