DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin raised serious questions on March 12, 2016, regarding Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's persistent refusal to acknowledge or address severe agrarian distress, citing official data revealing that 895 farmers and agricultural laborers committed suicide in Tamil Nadu during 2014. Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of rural lives, calling the administration's total apathy toward farming households an unpardonable betrayal of the state's agrarian foundation.

Stalin emphasized that back-to-back monsoon failures, drying delta river systems, plummeting crop yields, and mounting private debts had driven vulnerable cultivators into acute financial despair. Instead of providing comprehensive loan waivers, subsidizing agricultural inputs, or extending emergency compensation to grieving families, the ruling AIADMK government consistently denied that farmer suicides were occurring in Tamil Nadu, attempting to conceal uncomfortable statistics behind administrative denial.

Stalin demanded that the state government immediately release adequate relief funds to families of deceased farmers and implement systematic drought-mitigation programs across all farming districts. He pledged that an incoming DMK government will waive agricultural cooperative loans, establish guaranteed minimum support prices, and restore prosperity and dignity to the farming community.
