Editorial context

DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin called on Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on March 14, 2016, to take immediate steps to withdraw the newly imposed excise duty hike on gold jewelry. Stalin pointed out that the Union budget proposal imposing a one percent excise levy had triggered widespread panic and indefinite strikes across the jewelry manufacturing and retail sectors, threatening millions of dependent working-class households.

Stalin explained that the domestic jewelry sector is largely driven by small self-employed goldsmiths, traditional artisans, and small retail establishments who lack the accounting infrastructure to manage intricate central excise documentation. Subjecting traditional craftsmen to cumbersome tax inspections and bureaucratic harassment would paralyze grassroots manufacturing, stifle local trade hubs, and push thousands of skilled artisans into severe unemployment and debt.

Stalin urged the central government to recognize the practical difficulties confronting the jewelry industry and revoke the levy without standing on false prestige. He affirmed that the DMK staunchly stands with affected artisans, workers, and merchant associations, urging Union authorities to adopt constructive fiscal policies that protect traditional livelihoods rather than penalizing decentralized trade and micro-enterprises.
