Marking World Water Day on March 22, 2016, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin called on the people of Tamil Nadu to unite in a shared commitment to achieve lasting water self-sufficiency by interlinking the state's rivers. Stalin underscored that water security is the fundamental cornerstone of agricultural prosperity, industrial sustainability, and public health across all districts.

Stalin pointed out that recurrent droughts, declining water tables, and interstate river disputes had created severe distress for farmers and urban residents alike. He noted that surplus monsoon waters frequently drain into the sea without being conserved due to lack of comprehensive basin planning and unfinished irrigation infrastructure under the ruling administration. Stalin pledged that an incoming DMK government would prioritize intra-state river interlinking projects, systematically transferring surplus river runoff to parched southern and western districts.

Stalin affirmed that sustainable water management requires desilting traditional waterbodies, renovating ancient check dams, and modernizing canal networks on a mission mode. He emphasized that the DMK's visionary water policy aims to drought-proof agrarian regions, secure dependable drinking water supplies, and ensure that Tamil Nadu manages its vital aquatic resources efficiently for future generations.
