Addressing growing distress among the mercantile community across Tamil Nadu during ongoing election surveillance operations, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin urged the Chief Electoral Officer and the Election Commission to issue clear, unambiguous operational guidelines on cash seizures. Stalin noted that overzealous flying squads were intercepting and confiscating legitimate business funds carried by small retail traders, textile merchants, vegetable vendors, and agricultural commission agents, demanding impossible documentation on the spot and treating honest citizens like criminals.
Stalin pointed out that such arbitrary harassment had paralyzed daily market transactions and crippled local commercial economies in major trade hubs across the state. He demanded that the Election Commission immediately publish streamlined protocols establishing reasonable cash exemption thresholds for everyday commercial movement, ensuring that traders with legitimate invoices or bank withdrawal slips were not subjected to wrongful detention or harassment. Stalin reiterated that the Election Commission's primary duty was to track down and curb illegal cash distributions organized by the ruling AIADMK to influence voters, rather than terrorizing ordinary merchants. He called for urgent remedial directions to restore confidence and normal functioning across Tamil Nadu's commercial markets.
