Articulating a comprehensive infrastructure vision for Tamil Nadu's marine economy, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin announced major coastal welfare initiatives during his 2016 election campaign. Speaking to dense gatherings of traditional fishermen and coastal communities, Stalin lamented the complete apathy shown by the ruling AIADMK government toward basic maritime infrastructure. Coastal hamlets lacked all-weather berthing basins, safe fish landing jetties, diesel bunkering points, and dependable cold storage units, forcing fishermen into distress sales to exploitative middlemen immediately upon landing their catch.
Stalin pledged that an incoming DMK administration would construct modern, fully equipped fishing harbours at key coastal locations across the state, alongside integrated cold storage hubs and hygienic processing units. These facilities would ensure post-harvest preservation, minimize spoilage, and enable fisherfolk to fetch premium market prices for their catch in domestic and international export markets. He emphasized that the DMK recognizes artisanal fishing as a hazardous, vital productive industry deserving robust state investment. Stalin assured coastal families that modern infrastructure would be supplemented by interest-free boat mechanization loans, subsidized fuel allowances, and comprehensive disaster insurance coverage to secure their dignity and livelihoods.
