DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin sharply criticized the Election Commission of India for confining its constitutional role to superficial public awareness campaigns against cash-for-votes while turning a complete blind eye to blatant, industrial-scale money distribution by the ruling AIADMK. He stated that Tamil Nadu desperately required impartial and rigorous enforcement by the poll watchdog to ensure genuinely free and fair assembly elections.
Stalin pointed out that while the Election Commission spent crores of public money on celebrity advertisements, voter pledges, and street campaigns urging citizens not to sell their votes, it took zero deterrent action against ruling party functionaries caught red-handed transporting unaccounted cash. Flying squads and static surveillance teams selectively harassed ordinary traders and common citizens while allowing AIADMK ministers, vehicle convoys, and party networks to distribute illicit cash across constituencies, notably leading to massive seizures in Karur and Aravakurichi. Stalin emphasized that democracy was being reduced to a mockery when law enforcement authorities acted as passive onlookers to electoral bribery. He urged the commission to demonstrate institutional spine, seize corrupt funds, and disqualify offenders.
Stalin insisted that preserving the sanctity of the democratic vote is the constitutional duty of the Election Commission.
