Upon assuming charge as the Leader of Opposition in the 15th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin affirmed his resolute pledge to function as a constructive, vigilant, and people-centric opposition leader. Following the DMK's robust performance in the May 2016 assembly elections, which saw the party emerge with eighty-nine legislators—the largest opposition contingent in the state's legislative history—Stalin assured citizens that the DMK will give powerful voice to their everyday struggles.

Stalin stated that the opposition benches would not engage in obstructionism for its own sake, but would act as a responsible democratic watchdog, holding the AIADMK executive strictly accountable to the Constitution. He outlined core public priorities to be raised vigorously in the House, including the severe agrarian crisis in the Cauvery delta, widespread rural and urban unemployment, escalating farmer suicides, drinking water shortages, and deteriorating law and order. Stalin emphasized that democracy derives strength from robust legislative debates and transparent governance. He urged the ruling party and the Speaker to uphold democratic parliamentary traditions by granting adequate time for opposition members to articulate citizens' grievances.

Stalin reiterated that the DMK will champion the rights of ordinary people with unwavering determination inside the Assembly.
