DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin raised serious concern over the acute manpower shortage crippling the Tamil Nadu police department, pointing out that 19,157 posts remained vacant against a sanctioned strength of barely 1,21,014 personnel. He stressed that having such an abysmal police-to-population ratio for a state with over 7.78 crore citizens severely compromised crime prevention, public order, and citizen safety.
Stalin explained that while population growth, rapid urbanization, and modern socio-economic complexities demanded significant expansion of policing infrastructure, the AIADMK administration had failed even to fill existing sanctioned vacancies. Existing frontline personnel, from constables to inspectors, were subjected to inhuman working hours, physical exhaustion, and chronic stress without mandatory weekly rest or compensatory leave. Consequently, vital functions such as regular night patrolling, scientific investigation of offenses, intelligence gathering, and traffic management had broken down across urban commissionerates and rural districts. Stalin criticized the ruling regime for using the depleted police machinery for VIP security and surveillance of political rivals rather than protecting ordinary citizens.
Stalin demanded that the Chief Minister immediately initiate transparent, merit-based recruitment drives to fill all nineteen thousand police vacancies.
