DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin demanded that both the Union Ministry of External Affairs and the Tamil Nadu state government take urgent, high-priority diplomatic steps to secure the immediate release of thirty-four Tamil fishermen languishing in Sri Lankan prisons and retrieve ninety-five impounded mechanized fishing vessels. He stressed that prolonged inaction was destroying the livelihoods of vulnerable coastal families across Rameswaram, Pudukkottai, and Nagapattinam.
Stalin pointed out that while fishermen were occasionally released following protracted diplomatic exchanges, the Sri Lankan government consistently refused to return their confiscated mechanized trawlers and expensive fishing nets. These boats, each costing between twenty and forty lakh rupees, represented generational investments and heavy bank loans taken by poor fishermen. Left anchored in hostile conditions at Sri Lankan naval bases, the vessels suffered irreparable structural damage and decay. Stalin emphasized that Sri Lanka's calculated strategy of retaining boats aimed to economically cripple Tamil fishermen and permanently expel them from their traditional fishing grounds in Palk Bay. He called for direct ministerial intervention from New Delhi to retrieve all vessels unconditionally.
Stalin insisted that the Centre and state act in unison to protect the livelihood and maritime rights of Tamil fishermen.
