DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin sharply criticized Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for reducing the serious, recurring issue of Tamil fishermen arrests by the Sri Lankan Navy to routine letter-writing exercises. He pointed out that despite boasting a formidable contingent of fifty members of parliament across both houses, the ruling AIADMK had utterly failed to leverage its political strength in New Delhi to protect coastal communities.
Stalin stated that traditional fishermen from Rameswaram, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, and Thanjavur faced relentless mid-sea harassment, physical assaults, arrests, and seizure of their mechanized boats by the Sri Lankan Navy in Palk Bay waters. Instead of personally confronting Prime Minister Narendra Modi or leading an all-party parliamentary delegation to demand a permanent diplomatic solution, the Chief Minister satisfied herself with sending carbon-copy letters that central ministries routinely ignored. Stalin emphasized that boats confiscated by Sri Lanka represented the life savings and livelihood assets of humble fishing families, which were left to rot in foreign harbors. He stressed that defending the constitutional right to livelihood of Tamil fishermen required decisive executive action.
Stalin urged the Chief Minister to mobilize all state MPs and demand immediate bilateral action from the Union government.
