DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin voiced grave concern over the unprecedented and catastrophic plunge in coconut and copra prices, pointing out that several lakh coconut farmers across Tamil Nadu were pushed into severe financial distress. He stated that total market stagnation and collapsing wholesale prices had made it impossible for cultivators even to recover harvesting, plucking, and irrigation maintenance costs.
Stalin pointed out that farm-gate prices for raw coconuts had crashed from fifteen rupees to barely five rupees per nut, while copra prices dropped far below production expenses. While farmers in western and southern districts grappled with drought, borewell depletion, and pest invasions, the AIADMK administration remained utterly indifferent to their plight. Regulated market committees and government procurement centers established under the Price Support Scheme remained non-functional or imposed impractical moisture criteria, forcing farmers to make distress sales to private cartels. Stalin urged the government to establish direct procurement centers in every coconut-growing block, provide subsidized fertilizers and pest-management inputs, and grant adequate drought relief compensation to affected farmers.
Stalin demanded that the state administration intervene immediately to stabilize coconut prices and safeguard the livelihood of rural farming households.
