DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin urged the AIADMK state government to formulate a comprehensive policy utilizing indigenous coconut oil in the state's noon meal scheme and distributing it through fair price shops under the Public Distribution System (PDS). He emphasized that direct state procurement and distribution would provide an immediate lifeline to several lakh coconut growers facing unprecedented financial ruin due to severe market crashes.
Stalin pointed out that coconut cultivation forms the agrarian backbone of Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Pollachi, Dindigul, Theni, and Kanyakumari districts. However, unchecked imports of cheap palm oil, devastating pest attacks like the whitefly infestation, and acute monsoon failure had pushed copra and raw coconut prices to catastrophic lows. Replacing imported palm oil with locally procured coconut oil in welfare schemes would guarantee remunerative minimum support prices to cultivators while delivering nutritious, unadulterated cooking oil to school children and poor families. Stalin criticized the ruling administration for ignoring long-standing demands of farmer associations to procure copra directly through agricultural cooperative societies without middleman exploitation.
Stalin insisted that the state cabinet take an immediate policy decision to incorporate coconut oil in welfare programs and protect agrarian livelihoods.
