DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin expressed deep grief and indignation over the tragic suicide of twenty-two-year-old engineering graduate G. Lenin in Madurai, who took his own life following severe humiliation and coercive recovery tactics by private collection agents hired by a nationalized bank. Conveying his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, Stalin condemned the ruthless privatization of debt recovery targeting vulnerable educated youth.
Lenin, who completed his computer science engineering degree from an impoverished agricultural family, was struggling to secure a regular job in a sluggish economic environment. Stalin pointed out that commercial banks routinely write off thousands of crores of defaulted corporate loans without hesitation, yet unleash ruthless recovery agents to intimidate impoverished rural students for modest education loans. These collection agencies often violated Reserve Bank of India guidelines by threatening families, visiting residences late at night, and shaming defaulters in public. Stalin criticized the state and central governments for failing to enforce stringent regulations against predatory debt collection agencies and neglecting youth employment.
Stalin demanded strict criminal prosecution against the coercive recovery agents and urged comprehensive state debt relief for struggling students.
