DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin spearheaded a massive public demonstration in Vellore to condemn the Andhra Pradesh government for unilaterally increasing the height of a check-dam across the Palar river at Perumballam near Kuppam. Thousands of farmers, party cadres, and representatives of agricultural associations participated in the agitation to safeguard drinking water supplies and irrigation rights for northern districts of Tamil Nadu.

Addressing the massive gathering, Stalin pointed out that raising the check-dam from five feet to twelve feet flagrantly violated the historic 1892 Madras-Mysore interstate river agreement and subverted pending proceedings before the Supreme Court. He explained that obstructing natural river flows in the upper reaches would dry up the Palar riverbed, turning fertile agricultural tracts in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur into an arid desert. In addition, it would destroy the primary drinking water source catering to over thirty municipalities and town panchayats. Stalin condemned the AIADMK administration for maintaining passive silence and failing to secure a stay from the apex court.

Stalin reiterated that the DMK will relentlessly agitate until Andhra Pradesh halts illegal constructions on the Palar basin.
