DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin paid solemn tributes to former President of India and legendary aerospace scientist Bharat Ratna Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on his first death anniversary. Expressing deep dismay over the pathetic neglect of Dr. Kalam's resting place at Pei Karumbu in Rameswaram, Stalin urged both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments to expedite construction of a grand, world-class national memorial without further bureaucratic delay.
Dr. Kalam passed away on July 27, 2015, while lecturing students at IIM Shillong. Stalin pointed out that despite grand promises made during the state funeral by central and state leaders, a full year had elapsed with the burial site remaining covered under temporary tin sheets and plastic barricades, surrounded by litter and stray animals. He characterized this neglect as an unpardonable insult to a global icon who dedicated his entire life to scientific advancement, national defense, and youth mentorship. Stalin stressed that establishing an educational research library, science museum, and dignified memorial was an urgent national obligation.
Stalin demanded that central and state authorities immediately sanction necessary funds and complete the memorial structure with utmost dignity.
