DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin called upon the AIADMK state government to announce a comprehensive waiver of education loans availed by students across Tamil Nadu. Citing official banking data, Stalin pointed out that students from Tamil Nadu accounted for an extraordinary forty-five percent of the total educational loans disbursed across India between financial years 2013 and 2015, reflecting the intense aspiration for higher education among underprivileged youth.
Stalin explained that while expanding professional and higher education was a proud legacy of Tamil Nadu, rampant youth unemployment, lack of campus placements, and stagnant industrial growth had severely crippled graduates' repayment capacity. Nationalized and private banks routinely outsourced loan recovery to ruthless private collection agencies, subjecting impoverished students and their parents to relentless harassment, public humiliation, and psychological distress that occasionally drove distressed youth to suicide. Stalin recalled that during the 2016 assembly elections, the DMK had promised to waive student education loans. He urged the ruling AIADMK to emulate this progressive vision, assume the outstanding student debt liability, and provide immediate financial relief to struggling families.
Stalin insisted that liberating youth from crushing education debt is essential to secure their economic future.
