DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin led a massive public demonstration in Coimbatore to condemn the Kerala government's unilateral initiative to construct a dam across the Siruvani river at Attappady. Thousands of DMK cadres, representatives from ally parties, farmers, and civic activists joined the protest in the western industrial city to safeguard the drinking water and agricultural lifelines of the Kongu region.

Addressing the agitators, Stalin warned that constructing a dam across the Siruvani would reduce water inflow drastically, creating severe drinking water scarcity for over fifteen lakh residents in Coimbatore municipal corporation and adjoining rural town panchayats. In addition, it would parch thousands of acres of fertile agricultural lands dependent on the Bhavani river basin. Stalin sharply criticized the AIADMK state government for sleeping over the issue while the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests granted standard terms of reference for an environmental impact assessment to Kerala without consulting Tamil Nadu. He condemned the state administration's utter lack of vigilance in protecting inter-state riparian entitlements.

Stalin affirmed that the DMK will escalate mass agitations until Kerala completely abandons the Siruvani dam project.
