DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin called upon Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to immediately rollback the newly introduced dynamic flexi-fare pricing system implemented in premium trains including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto Express. He stressed that introducing surge pricing in public railway transport imposes an unfair economic burden on ordinary middle-class commuters, students, and working-class families.
Under the controversial scheme, train fares increased by ten percent for every ten percent of berths booked, escalating up to a steep fifty percent hike above base fares. Stalin pointed out that Indian Railways has historically operated as an accessible public welfare utility and the primary lifeline of common citizens, not a commercial enterprise driven solely by profit extraction. Mimicking the exploitative surge models of private airlines and app-based cab aggregators undermined the foundational social objective of affordable mass transportation. He noted that common passengers already endured cancelled services, delayed schedules, deteriorating onboard amenities, and inadequate safety infrastructure.
Stalin demanded that the Union government immediately scrap the anti-people flexi-fare mechanism and prioritize affordable ticket fares, dependable service quality, and passenger commuter safety.
