DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa to seek immediate, direct intervention from the Union government to resolve the escalating Cauvery water crisis and ensure the physical safety of Tamils living in Karnataka. He emphasized that the state government must act with administrative urgency to address the dual crisis threatening delta agriculture and the lives of diaspora Tamils.
Following the Supreme Court's order directing Karnataka to release water, widespread violence and arson broke out in Bengaluru, Mandya, and Mysuru, where miscreants targeted Tamil-owned shops, schools, commercial complexes, and private vehicles. Stalin pointed out that while delta farmers in Tamil Nadu faced acute distress due to inadequate water for standing samba crops, linguistic minorities in Karnataka were living under intense fear and harassment. He criticized the state administration for not actively coordinating with the Centre to deploy central paramilitary forces and ensure border transit security. Stalin called upon the Chief Minister to personally engage with the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister.
Stalin reiterated that protecting farmers' riparian rights and safeguarding Tamil lives across borders remain non-negotiable state duties.
