DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin expressed profound shock and deep suspicion over the prison department's official assertion that P. Ramkumar, the sole accused in the gruesome murder of software engineer S. Swathi at Nungambakkam railway station, had committed suicide inside Puzhal Central Prison. He stated that the mysterious demise of a key suspect in a high-profile case under judicial custody raised disturbing questions about state accountability.
According to prison authorities, Ramkumar allegedly pulled a live electric wire from a switchboard and bit into it. Stalin pointed out that the entire explanation was riddled with glaring improbabilities and demanded scrutiny of prison security protocols. In a high-security correctional facility housing undertrials accused of sensational offenses, prisoners were supposed to remain under constant visual surveillance by wardens. Stalin noted that right from Ramkumar's initial arrest in Tirunelveli, where police claimed he slit his throat, the investigation had been surrounded by conflicting narratives. He argued that allowing an undertrial to perish in custody denied justice to the victim's family and buried potential truths.
Stalin urged the state administration to conduct a thorough, transparent probe to fix responsibility for this grave custodial failure.
